Consumer Council reviews nutrition facts label of biscuits

The latest issue no. 324 Consumer Report features a comparison report on the nutrition facts label of biscuits, the report concludes that most samples contain high contents of fat, sugar and sodium, consumers are reminded to adopt the “3 Low 1 High” balanced diet.

The current report compares a total of 84 samples of 8 kinds of biscuits to check their contents of calories and total fat, etc..

Label information to help choose healthier food products

“Low sugar, low fat, low sodium and high fiber” is the most popular diet now, the current comparison repost shows that most samples do not meet the “3 Low 1 High” requirement, the samples are also found to contain high contents of fat, sugar or sodium or even more than one ingredients. Samples of wafer, cookie and saltine cracker are found to contain lots of fat; though dietary fibre are found in oats biscuits, many of those samples belong to the “3 High” group; cartoon/animal biscuits that are children’s favourties usually contain high level of sugar, parents are reminded to avoid overeating by children and consumers should not replace meals with biscuits.

According to the label information, about 20 percent of the samples contain trans fat which increase the risk of getting cardiovascular disease. Food label is crucial to consumers when choosing food products, the Consumer Council will continue to carry out survey and comparison report and disclose such information to consumers. Consumers are recommended to pay attention to the ingredients and contents of pre-packaged food items.

Calculate intake based on WHO recommendation

In order to let consumers understand information about nutrition intake and adopt the “3 Low 1 High” healthy diet, the mentioned report quotes the recommended daily intake of nutrients by the WHO for consumers’ reference.

Retail industry urged to continue epidemic prevention work

Due to the gradual increase in the number of mainland citizens traveling to Macao, the Consumer Council and the relevant departments started distributing leaflets of guidelines of epidemic prevention work in July and call on the retail industry to maintain their work and serve customer with honesty and integrity to boost their confidence in shopping.
